Gerrick D. Kennedy is an award-winning journalist.
Kennedy is a music writer for The Los Angeles Times and covers pop, R&B/soul and hip-hop.
He has covered everything from the death of pop titan Whitney Houston to the resurgence of boybands and female emcees. As for interviews, he has sat down with some of pop's biggest players including Sean "Diddy" Combs, Chris Brown, Brandy, Nas, Drake, Mary J. Blige, Kelly Clarkson, Usher, R. Kelly, T.I., Nicki Minaj and Lil Wayne.
An Ohio native, he earned a Bachelor's Degree of Arts in Journalism from The Ohio State University, where he was a founding member of the campus chapter of the National Association of Black Journalists. He served as the editor, managing editor and Arts & Life editor of The Lantern, OSU's student newspaper. He has interned at the State Journal in Lansing, Mich., and The Advocate in Newark, Ohio, is a graduate of The New York Times Student Institute and worked as a contributing writer for Monarch Magazine and College News.
He was honored by the University of Southern California's Black Student Association for his contributions to journalism. In 2012, he was named Emerging Journalist of the Year by the National Association of Black Journalists.
